Infrasound Network for Sensing Identification and Trajectory Evaluation (INSITE)

INSITE aims to design, build and operate a network of groundstations that detect Infrasound waves, as well as analyzing them. The analysis will determine from which direction the wave hit the detector, and a simulation software will then simulate where the source was. Each groundstation will consist of 3 sensors in a triangle configuration, so the phase differences can be used to determine the direction of incidence.

Why Infrasound

Infrasound are acoustic waves with a frequency below 20Hz. These waves are attenuate less the lower their frequency, which means that they can travel very far. They can propagate to the tropopause where they can be reflected back downwards. This allows them to travel even farther by boucing between the ground and tropopause.
